Kyrsten Sinema ‘takes offense’ to border comments from White House: ‘Factually not true’

Sen. Kyrsten Sinema (I-Ariz.) on Tuesday accused the Biden administration of lying about the situation at the southern border amid an influx of migrants.

The senator said she “takes offense” to White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre’s questionable claim that illegal immigration is “down by more than 90%.”

“Obviously, the border is not secure. Anyone with eyes can see that,” Sinema told Fox News host Bret Baier

The ex-Democrat then ripped the White House spokeswoman for boasting this week about President Biden’s handling of the surge of migrants at the southern border. Sinema called statements made by Jean-Pierre “factually not true.”

“Anyone who lives in a border state like I do, born and raised in Arizona, actually takes offense at comments like that because they’re just factually not true,” Sinema said.

“The reality is, is that border communities in my state are suffering already, and that’s before the end of Title 42.”

The Arizona senator was referencing Jean-Pierre’s Monday claim about the Biden administration’s humanitarian “parolee” program for asylum seekers from Cuba, Nicaragua, Haiti and Venezuela.

The parolee program has allowed 30,000 asylum seekers from those four countries to be admitted to the US each month.

“You’ve seen the parolee program be so successful,” Jean-Pierre said during her press briefing. “It has, it has, it has, when it comes to illegal migration, you’ve seen it come down by more than 90%, and that’s because of this act — the actions that this president has taken.”

Jean-Pierre did not specify during what time period the White House believes illegal immigration has dropped by that level.

She also called the Biden approach to the immigration crisis “humane” and a “way that actually deals with what we’re seeing at the border.”

Jean-Pierre was widely mocked on social media for the claim, which the restrictionist immigration group Center for Immigration Studies called “Not True” in a fact-check.

Sinema shared how small communities in her border state are suffering because of the border crisis.

“It is not secure. It is not safe,” Sinema told Baier about the border between Mexico and Arizona.

She claimed her constituents have told her about frequent high-speed chases involving drugs and migrant smugglers and law enforcement.

Sinema added that Biden’s plan to send 1,500 troops to the southern border “should be helpful,” but is “nowhere near enough” to end the crisis.

“It would be most helpful if the administration would start by actually enforcing the laws that are on the books,” she said.
