Ceuta should be a warning for Spain, America, and the entire West

If there was one thing that embodied the current mass migration crisis of the West, it would be the invasion of the Spanish city of Ceuta in North Africa by tens of thousands of military-aged illegal migrant men from Morocco and other North African countries.
The images of these illegal aliens literally breaking into, terrorizing, and wreaking havoc in Ceuta – akin to ancient armies storming besieged cities – shocked both Europeans and Americans.
But the Ceuta incursion should not have been at all surprising.
Given the illegal migrant amnesty forced upon Spain by the left-wing government in Madrid, coupled with a reckless ruling by the country’s Supreme Court, it was completely predictable and only a matter of time. And it should be treated as a five-‘til-twelve warning to the entire Western world.
Earlier this year, Spain’s socialist anti-borders prime minister rammed through a massive amnesty via royal decree.
The original estimates were that “only” about 500,000 migrants would be “regularized.” Mission creep quickly set in, and the real numbers exceeded those projections more than twice over. Police in Spain also claim large-scale fraud. Both FAIR and European experts easily predicted this outcome.
Similarly, we predicted that the amnesty would not fix the illegal migration crisis, but would make it even worse by incentivizing more illegal migrants to try their luck.
And, in Ceuta, they did just that.
These common-sense predictions came true not due to any special clairvoyance. Anyone not blinded by anti-borders ideology and the accompanying “suicidal empathy” complex could have foretold the obvious outcome.
A poorly thought-through ruling by Spain’s Supreme Court earlier in July poured jet fuel onto the Sanchez amnesty fire. The court decided that illegal border crossers could only be summarily deported if they had crossed a physical land barrier. If they swam in or otherwise circumvented a border fence or barrier, they would have the right to so-called “due process,” asylum applications, etc. (which, in Europe, so often means “catch and release”).
Human smugglers were clearly paying attention and immediately issued a clarion call.
As both Americans and Europeans know well, irresponsible rulings by activist judges can have profoundly negative immigration consequences, including incentivizing mass illegal migrant influxes trying to exploit the resulting loopholes.
Commenators have pointed out other factors as well, including “hybrid warfare” by Morocco against Spain, or political propaganda by Islamists within Morocco.
Either way, the migrants simply exploited a wide gaping hole left open for them by amnesty and the courts.
Had Spain practiced deterrence, like the U.S. under Trump or Poland in recent years, hostile actors would have had a much harder time deploying weaponized migration against it.
“After this unprecedented migrant invasion, Spain remains plunged into shock and disbelief,” EU expert and native of Spain, Rodrigo Ballester, told FAIR. “Too many questions remain unanswered after this unprecedented aggression, and trust in Pedro Sanchez and his government, already severely damaged, is at its lowest point.”
Spain’s government attempted to act tough, as if they had everything under control, but Ballester adds: “After this disaster, how can anyone believe that 49,000 people were dispersed the very next day? ‘Move along, nothing happened,’ that’s the line the government is trying to make us swallow.” And there is nothing preventing yet another rush on the border from happening again.
And again.
Meanwhile, in the U.S., we suffered under a four-year Ceuta-like border crisis under Joe Biden. Upon returning to office, Donald Trump quickly ended that crisis, secured the border, and began deporting illegal aliens rather than rewarding and inviting them in. However, in spite of the lesson of the Biden Border Crisis, the 1986 amnesty, or the current Ceuta debacle, some – including those who should know better – continue to call for amnesty for illegal aliens.
And, of course, anti-borders radicals are fanatically chomping at the bit to regain power so they can dismantle border security and interior enforcement and open us up to a large-scale Ceuta, New-World-style.
The sad reality is that – in spite of sudden tough talk by the likes of Mr. Sanchez – the anti-borders left sees Ceuta - or Biden-style mass illegal border rushes not as bugs, but as features.
As difficult as it may be for normal Americans and Europeans to grasp it, the anti-borders extremists want exactly what is going on. Mass migration crises are not a problem (only those who notice them and complain are!), but an opportunity to further undermine Western nation-states, abolish borders, and usher in a globalist utopia (in reality, a dystopia).
Spain’s far-left amnesty supporter Irene Montero admitted just this, stating openly that it was her sincere hope that amnesty would allow the “replacement” of so-called “fascists and racists” (read: normal anti-mass-migration Europeans) with migrants.
On both sides of the Atlantic, it is thus time to wake up and secure the borders. And, as loud and obnoxious as the anti-borders extremists are, we should care not one iota for their boos and criticism, for we have seen repeatedly what they cheer and support.
