Power and the southern border

Why would Democratic leaders open the U.S. border to hundreds of thousands of illegal aliens?  Simple: It's all about power.  The Democrats' thirst for power.  Getting it and keeping it.  In our system of government, that means getting more votes.  The illegal aliens of today are the Democratic voters of tomorrow.  That's how Democratic leaders see them anyway.  Democrats don't believe they can win elections honestly in the long run, so they need more Democratic voters.  If they cannot turn more American voters their way, then new voters from South and Central America will do just fine.  First, they need to get them here.  Second, at some point in the future, these new illegal aliens will need to be given the vote.  That is the immigration crisis — just not the one being reported.

The crisis being reported is the inhumane conditions at detention facilities housing thousands of alien children.  If illegal alien children are suffering at the southern border of the United States right now, it is a direct result of the Democrats' unquenchable thirst for power.  The Democrat party is not stupid; these people know full well that mass migration into this country is bad for its citizens in many ways.  But serving their constituents is not their primary goal; acquiring power and securing it permanently are.  Aren't they worried about pictures of children living in horrible conditions in immigration facilities?  No — a little bad press is a small price to pay for conducting a successful political coup.

Using crises to accomplish a goal that they can't get through the political process is Democrat 101.  It has been used for decades.  Democrats are masters at exploiting crises.  They don't care what the crisis is, only that they have one they can exploit to achieve their goal of consolidating power.  The great thing about a crisis, real or created, is that power-hungry politicians know that the public is more willing to give the government some leeway if it will help them deal with the crisis.  But to understand what is really happening, you have to look behind the crisis.  There is always an agenda at work behind it.

When Democrats say they have an immigration plan, they don't mean that they plan to:

— secure the border to help protect Americans from COVID-19

— protect Americans from aliens who have committed additional crimes

— protect Americans from terrorists

— protect American taxpayers from the burden of millions of dependent aliens stressing the health care, law enforcement, and government services systems

What Democrats mean is that they intend to trade illegal border crossings for Democratic votes.  The nation may have a crisis on the southern border.  The Biden administration does not.  All is going according to plan.

Memorial Day Tribute: Honoring Our Fallen Heroes

In 1967, "Memorial Day" became the official title of the somber holiday we observe on May 31. Across the country, ceremonies will take place at all 141 national cemeteries in the United States and 24 others on foreign soil. More than 3 million soldiers, sailors, airmen, Marines and Guardsmen are interred in these hallowed burial grounds. In words written on stone markers, military cemeteries tell the story of who we are as a people.

Since 1776, more than 1.5 million Americans in uniform have given their lives for the cause of freedom. Regardless of when they served or how they died, all the heroes interred in our national cemeteries and elsewhere sacrificed for their country. To selflessly serve a higher cause, they gave up the comforts of home and the warmth and affection of loved ones.

In his inaugural address on Jan. 20, 1961, President John F. Kennedy said: "We shall pay any price, bear any burden, meet any hardship, support any friend, oppose any foe to assure the survival ... of liberty." On this Memorial Day, we remember and honor the American patriots who paid the price, bore the burden and met the hardships to assure the survival of our liberty.

There are few things more selfless or noble than sacrificing one's life for a higher cause, particularly when that cause is the freedom and security of our fellow Americans. This is the reason the day is set aside to honor our military heroes who gave what Abraham Lincoln called their "last full measure of devotion" in defense of freedom.

Although Memorial Day is a day of remembrance, it is not an occasion for grief or mourning. Rather, it is a day for remembering and giving thanks. General George S. Patton said it best: "It is wrong to mourn the men who died. Rather, we should thank God such men lived." Indeed, we should. America has survived as a nation for more than 240 years because brave men and women are willing to die for an idea; the idea that God granted them, in the words of Thomas Jefferson, "certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness."

As citizens of this great country, we are able to enjoy the blessings set forth in the Declaration of Independence because God endowed us with these blessings and American heroes sacrificed their lives preserving them. As Americans enjoy Memorial Day cookouts and picnics, we pray they will stop long enough to remember why they are free to do so.

As citizens of the world's foremost bastion of liberty, we have long benefitted from the freedoms spelled out in the Bill of Rights. We must never take these or any of our rights for granted or forget those who sacrificed their lives preserving them for us. This is why it is so important to set aside one day out of the year to remember our fallen heroes and give thanks for them.

More than 16 million Americans served in World War II. Only a handful of the "Greatest Generation" remain. Others died fighting the tyranny of communism in the mind-numbing cold of Korea while outnumbered 10 to one.

On the heels of the Korean conflict, more than 12 million Americas donned the uniform to serve in what was called the "cold war," a decades-long conflict that was anything but cold. Then came the Vietnam War, during which more than 7 million Americans served and 58,267 warriors lost their lives.

Since the end of the Vietnam War, Americans have continued to sacrifice for freedom in far-flung hot spots such as Iraq, Afghanistan and Africa. Therefore, on this Memorial Day, we encourage all Americans to remember our fallen heroes and pass down the stories of their sacrifices so future generations never forget.

Remember the Cost of a Free and Undivided Republic

If you open a paper this week, you will see ads for Memorial Day sales. Your inbox is probably being inundated with such ads. Along with sales, Memorial Day images include BBQs, parties and pool openings. It's the official beginning of summer. Many people travel to a beach, a lake or a mountain. Some traditions include visiting a memorial park or a cemetery to honor the fallen. Whatever you do this Memorial Day weekend, spend a few moments thinking about the real meaning of the day.

It's the day to remember those who gave their lives to keep our country safe and free so we can work toward prosperity. Memorial Day began as Decoration Day after the Civil War. The graves of the fallen soldiers were decorated to honor what they sacrificed -- their lives -- to keep our country united. Credit for Memorial Day goes to John Logan, who served as an Illinois congressman prior to the Civil War, volunteered as a Union soldier and was promoted during the war to general. In 1868, he issued an order to honor those who had died in the war.

"The 30th day of May, 1868, is designated for the purpose of strewing with flowers or otherwise decorating the graves of comrades who died in defense of their country," the order said. "We should guard their graves with sacred vigilance." Logan described their deaths as "the cost of free and undivided republic."

More than 600,000 American soldiers died during the Civil War, which remains the most deadly war for Americans.

While not all of us are called to serve our country in the armed forces or the political arena, we can all make a difference through the ways we live our lives. With freedom comes responsibility -- responsibility to ensure that our freedom is maintained. Freedom is never free; it comes at a cost of lives, vigilance, time and effort.

The Declaration of Independence provides the foundation for our country: "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness." We have life and liberty and must guard them both, but we are provided only with the opportunity to pursue happiness, not a guarantee of happiness. Whether you achieve happiness is up to you and is not the responsibility of our government.

In November 1863, then-President Abraham Lincoln reminded us of our responsibility when he delivered his address at the dedication of the Soldiers National Cemetery at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. The Civil War was still raging. He was not the main speaker for the day but had been invited as an afterthought. His speech was so short (less than two minutes) that the photographer did not have time to get a picture of him delivering it.

Its 278 words don't include "I" or "me," but they do take the audience from our start as a nation and the American Revolution to Lincoln's wishes for the future of our nation.

He said: "Four score and seven years ago our fathers brought forth, upon this continent, a new nation, conceived in liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that 'all men are created equal.'... It is rather for us, the living, to be here dedicated to the great task remaining before us -- that, from these honored dead we take increased devotion to that cause for which they... gave the last full measure of devotion -- that we here highly resolve these dead shall not have died in vain; that the nation, shall have a new birth of freedom, and that government of the people, by the people, for the people shall not perish from the earth."

This Memorial Day, do as millions of others will be doing by spending a minute in silence at 3 p.m. local time, the National Moment of Remembrance. Remember the military men and women who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our safety and freedom. After Memorial Day, take an interest and get involved in what it means to be an American. Help others understand the importance being an American and living out the American dream. Educate your children about those Americans who have died so others could remain free, and reach out to veterans who were able to return home.

Let's give thanks and increase our devotion to our country so our military men and women will not have died in vain.

Simple Fix That Works to an Enormous Problem

 

Biden Administration Needs to Strengthen Border Security

I know it’s probably not a surprise, but this new administration is soft on border security when it comes to illegal immigrants and drugs. Some of us hoped that common sense might prevail, but instead we have witnessed a surge at the southern border with people trying to enter the country illegally because of Biden’s soft message on immigration. We are seeing something similar with regard to the import of illegal opioids using the regular mails.

Right now, the Biden Administration is not enforcing existing law aggressively enough to stop overseas drug cartels from using the international postal system to serve as drug mules. This makes it easier than ever to smuggle drugs into America. The problem is that many overseas dealers of the opioid fentanyl are using regular post offices to mail the drugs into the United States because it is so easy. Our border security with regard to illegal drug imports is soft.

There are some simple solutions that this administration could take to stop it, if they even want to. One solution involves closing some loopholes that exist at the U.S. Postal Service (USPS).

A few short years ago, Congress passed, and President Trump signed, the Synthetics Trafficking & Overdose Prevention Act or STOP Act that mandated on January 1, 2021 the USPS roll out regulations to stop the entry of packages shipped without knowing the identity of where it is coming from and where it is going. The federal government had two years to pull together regulations on how to stop the flow of drugs using the postal service, yet they missed that deadline. When they did roll out regulations recently, the regs proved deficient with existing loopholes and areas that can be exploited by international bad guys.

Using electronic tracking information to track all international packages and letters is a simple solution that would dramatically slow the import of fentanyl. That simple and crucial element is not part of the new regulations.

Many foreign based drug exporters choose their local post office because they do not require advanced electronic data (AED) to follow the packages and letters. Paul Steidler, Senior Fellow with the Lexington Institute, wrote in The Hill on May 7, 2021, “The STOP Act required AED on all packages being delivered by USPS from China beginning Jan. 1, 2019 and from other countries Jan. 1, 2021. But CBP did not issue interim final regulations (IFR) until March 15, 2021 even though they were required by October 2019. The regulations are far less rigorous than Congress intended. More troubling, packages without AED continue to be delivered throughout America.” In other words, the law is not being enforced in a way the authors, Sens. Rob Portman (R-OH), Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) and Tom Carper (D-DE) intended. Congress has provided the Biden Administration the tools to enforce the law, yet they have not yet done so.

Opioid abuse and solutions were a focus of the prior administration. This is an issue that President Donald J. Trump worked hard to solve by setting up the President’s Commission on Combatting Drug Addiction and the Opioid Crisis. One of the recommendations of Trump’s commission was to use federal assets “to intercept fentanyl (and other synthetic opioids) in envelopes and packages at mail processing distribution centers, and increase detection efforts using enhanced technology, more manpower, and expanded canine deployment.” The Trump commission and Congress recognized that one of the ways drugs get to users in the United States from international drug dealers is through the regular mail. 

The Department of Homeland Security’s proposed rule, the “Mandatory Electronic Information for International Mail Shipments” will preserve the loophole that allows fentanyl to be transmitted in very small packages that are considered letters. Because these letters are not tracked, the bad guys use them to send in drugs. The ‘Letter Loophole’ will continue until this rule is changed to close it and these drugs will flow in through that opening in the regulations. It makes no sense that the Biden Administration is missing the boat on the implementation of a simple rule to implement the STOP Act that would dramatically curb the import of these dangerous drugs.

Border security is very important, and it seems as if this administration has fallen down on the job at the southern border on immigration and drug imports. Better rhetoric to the world on enforcement at the border on illegal immigration would help. It would also help if Biden sent out word that all packages and letters will be tracked to stop all fentanyl imports. These seem like very simple fixes to some big problems.
