Migrants run illegal market under New York City expressway

Hundreds of migrants are running an illegal open-air market under a New York City expressway, the New York Post reported Saturday.

According to the outlet, more than 200 migrants are residing under a stretch of the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway at Park Avenue and Hall Street.

The area has been converted into a “mini-city,” the Post reported, where migrants sell goods and services. Some individuals are using the area to sell Nike sneakers, and others are offering haircuts.

New York City’s closest shelter is only a block away, but many stated they do not want to stay in the city’s shelter system or were evicted after reaching the 30-day maximum stay limit. Individuals reported being unable to find permanent shelter.

Roughly 3,000 migrants have reached the shelter stay limit, but only half have reapplied for shelter space.

A 48-year-old from Ecuador told the Post that he arrived in the country six months ago and moved to the street after reaching the city’s shelter stay limit.

“It’s very hard,” he said. “[The immigration system] has no heart. We are human beings. We have the right to seek opportunities in our lives.”

In July, the city’s sanitation workers and police cleared out the makeshift tent city, but migrants quickly returned. The outlet noted that the tents were removed, but asylum-seekers are now sleeping in open-air homes under the expressway, with mattresses and tables splayed out between parked vehicles.

A 36-year-old Peruvian migrant told the Post in July, “We don’t want to live [in the encampment], but it’s better than the shelters.” He noted that he regretted coming to the United States after experiencing poor living conditions.

“I had a good house back in my country,” he continued. “This is terrible – I never thought I would live someplace like this.”

Neighbors are fed up with the unsanitary conditions. Some have even reported seeing migrants carrying guns. Clinton Hill residents said that migrants have been drinking and smoking in the children’s playground nearby.

One area resident told the Post, “The problem hasn’t gotten any better, it’s gotten worse and continues to get worse.”

“I’d rather see the tents. It literally looks and smells horrible down there now,” he added.

Another neighbor told the outlet, “There’s smells of urine and trash everywhere, and it’s just sad that the city doesn’t seem to care about the people that live here, that are from here, that pay taxes.”

“New Yorkers seem to be second-class citizens in all of this — and that’s the most upsetting part of it all,” the resident stated.

Federal Contractor Urges DHS To Ditch Term ‘Illegal Immigrant,’ Says ‘Jihadist’ Is ‘Racially Charged’

RAND corporation advises feds in government-funded report to adopt 'inclusive language'

By  Spencer Lindquist Oct 30, 2023 DailyWire.com

A federal contractor that’s received hundreds of millions of dollars from the federal government is pushing the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to adopt “inclusive language,” replacing terms like “illegal immigrant” with “undocumented noncitizen,” “riot” with “protest,” and suggesting that terms such as “looter” and “jihadist” have become “racially charged.”

The report from the RAND Corporation, a nonprofit which operates the Homeland Security Operational Analysis Center as a “federally funded research and development center,” charges the DHS uses language that is “insulting, demeaning, dehumanizing, offensive, embarrassing, or othering or otherwise make individuals feel uncomfortable, marginalized, disrespected, or unsafe.”

Titled “Language, Labels, and the DHS Lexicon,” the report was drafted on behalf of the agency’s Office for Civil Rights and Civil Liberties. It particularly focuses on immigration enforcement, counterterrorism efforts, and law enforcement, charging that these three operation areas use offensive language, relying on interviews with 15 individuals under the jurisdiction of DHS.

The 84-page report specifically requests that DHS ditch the term “illegal immigrant” in favor of “undocumented noncitizen” while replacing the word “assimilation” with “civic integration.” It even proposed replacing the term “unlawful entry” with “entry without inspection” or “undocumented entry.”

House Homeland Security Committee Chairman Mark Green (R-TN) told The Daily Wire that the effort to change language is a “deceitful and Orwellian strategy.”

“Most Americans are fed up with the chaos and devastation caused by the unprecedented crisis at the Southwest border, and rising crime in their communities,” Green said. “Despite this, DHS’ number one priority seems to be rewriting the dictionary.”

Green went on to call the move “a ploy to hide Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas’ complete failure of leadership,” charging that Mayorkas “has not only chosen to implement a reckless open-borders agenda — he is using taxpayer dollars to change our language in an effort to hide the consequences of those policies.”

The attempt to soften language used to describe illegal immigration comes against a backdrop of a record-breaking surge in illegal immigration. Illegal border crossings have spiked under the Biden administration, with an estimated 1.7 million illegal immigrant gotaways recorded since Biden took office in 2021.

But the report goes beyond the issue of immigration, even suggesting that the DHS should modify its use of “male” and “female” by adding “nonbinary, cisgender,” and “transgender.” It also calls for the word “riot” to be replaced with “protest” despite the two words not being synonymous.

The report even charged that certain terms have “taken on a racialized or racially charged aspect beyond what their legal or common definition might be,” resulting in “disparate impact.” Terms like “looter,” “trespasser,” “rioter,” and “jihadist” are said to have “become racially charged as they are mostly applied to individuals of a particular race and not to White individuals.”

But the report doesn’t take issue with the factual definitions of the words, rather it explains “it is the disparate application of the term, rather than the definition, that has caused it to become disrespectful or damaging.”

It goes on to call on DHS to adopt “inclusive language” and offer training on “the use of inclusive, person-centric language, particularly for minority and historically marginalized groups.” But the report even claims that as of now, “the use of certain terms and language by DHS personnel is … making the job of securing the homeland more difficult for its employees.”

Despite the overt nods to leftwing ideology, the Rand Corporation analysis argues that a “dedicated focus to using person-centric  and inclusive language should not be dismissed as “woke,” or as a political, progressive, or partisan issue.”

The Rand Corporation confirmed in a statement to The Daily Wire that it had produced the report at the request of DHS’s Office of Civil Rights and Civil Liberties, specifying that it was asked “to examine the department’s use of terminology in its documents and procedures, identify ways to improve it, and to create an organizational culture that supports the lasting implementation of updated terminology.”

Todd Bensman, a Senior National Security Fellow at the Center for Immigration Studies, bashed the proposed replacement terms, saying they “sound far more demeaning than the ones they replace.”

“It’s better to just simply distinguish them as people who are present illegally in violation of law than as people who warrant a lot of acrobatic descriptions,” Bensman said.

The report is the result of a recently renewed contract with the DHS, which allows the agency to order $495 million worth of studies and analysis over the course of five years.

“One of the best ways to hold bureaucrats accountable is to bring their deeds to the light, and inform the American people of what those officials are doing behind the scenes,” Green told The Daily Wire, also highlighting recent efforts by his committee to obtain DHS documentation concerning the border crisis. He also signaled potential future action from lawmakers.

“Based on this latest report, perhaps it’s time for Congress to take a closer look at the Office of Civil Rights and Civil Liberties,” Green said.

EXCLUSIVE: 100 Syrians, 50 Iranians Cross Biden’s Open Border in October, Says Source

Randy Clark 29 Oct 2023 breitbart.com

EAGLE PASS, Texas — According to a source within CBP, the influx of Special Interest Migrants across the U.S./Mexico border continues early in the NEW fiscal year as nearly 100 Syrian and 50 Iranian nationals have been apprehended by the Border Patrol since the beginning of October. The source says the influx of Syrian and Iranian Special Interest Migrants is concerning, considering the turmoil unfolding in the Middle East.

The Syrian and Iranian migrants were apprehended in multiple sectors across the southwest border during October. The latest arrest of an Iranian national by the Border Patrol occurred near Eagle Pass, Texas, on Saturday. The Iranian national was discovered within a single group of more than 300 that crossed into the small border city. A debrief of the Iranian migrant is pending as of press time, according to the source.

The source says the continued encounter of Syrian and Iranian nationals is more concerning considering the recent U.S. air strikes against Iran-linked sites in Syria in response to drone and missile attacks on U.S. military bases in the region. According to the source, the arrivals of Special Interest Migrants at the southwest border are appearing with little to no advance intelligence warning.

“We are receiving no advance warning of the arrival of Special Interest Migrants from the region with any specificity,” the source explained. “We are left to sort through the grab-bag of migrants in small and large groups to figure out who is in the group and why they are coming.”

Eleven Special Interest Migrants from Middle Eastern countries were apprehended in just one sector of the border patrol in one week alone.

As reported by Breitbart Texas, during the week of October 8 to October 14, Border Patrol agents apprehended six Iranian nationals, three Lebanese nationals, one Egyptian national, and one Saudi Arabian national that made landfall in Texas on the banks of the Rio Grande in the Del Rio Border Patrol Sector that includes Eagle Pass.

The Syrian and Iranian Special Interest Migrants are mostly single adult males. Both countries are subject to travel warnings by the U.S. State Department. The State Department has issued a Level-4 advisory regarding travel to Syria due to terrorism, civil unrest, kidnapping, armed conflict, and the risk of unjust detention.

Iran is also subject to a Level-4 travel warning by the State Department due to the risk of kidnapping and the arbitrary arrest and detention of U.S. citizens.

The source says, absent any significant intelligence indicting a Special Interest migrant may pose a known threat to the United States, they are generally released into the U.S. to pursue asylum claims.

As reported by Breitbart Texas, more than 61,000 Special Interest Migrants were encountered by the Border Patrol in Fiscal Year 2023, which ended on September 30.  The number of migrants from Special Interest countries climbed by more than 140 percent from Fiscal Year 2022, when more than 25,500 were apprehended. In all, more than 86,000 Special Interest migrants have illegally entered the United States in the previous two fiscal years.

According to a 2019 DHS fact sheet, the term “Significant Interest Alien” is defined as follows:

Generally, an SIA is a non-U.S. person who, based on an analysis of travel patterns, potentially poses a national security risk to the United States or its interests.  Often, such individuals or groups employ travel patterns known or evaluated to possibly have a nexus to terrorism. DHS analysis includes an examination of travel patterns, points of origin, and/or travel segments that are tied to current assessments of national and international threat environments.

This does not mean that all SIAs are “terrorists,” but rather that the travel and behavior of such individuals indicate a possible nexus to nefarious activity (including terrorism) and, at a minimum, provide indicators that necessitate heightened screening and further investigation.  The term SIA does not indicate any specific derogatory information about the individual – and DHS has never indicated that the SIA designation means more than that.
