Is America Starting Down the Path of Nazi Germany?

I cannot express how truly sad writing this op-ed has made me. But I'm a patriotic American. And I'm an American Jew. I have studied the beginnings of Nazi Germany and the Holocaust. And I can clearly see parallels with what is happening in America today. Thank God we have President Trump (at the moment) keeping us from heading too far down this tragic path. But I must warn my fellow Americans that we are clearly headed in a frightening and tragic direction. 

I know I'm not alone. A recent poll shows 80% of the American public believes things are spiraling "out of control."

I never thought I'd write the following words about living in America: Those caught in the middle of the recent "protests" in American cities, especially those seeing their businesses looted, burned or destroyed; seeing police stations burned or seized by radicals; or seeing their town's downtown business district taken hostage by thugs finally understand how Jews felt in Nazi Germany during the infamous Kristallnacht.

    

This is exactly how it started in Nazi Germany all those decades ago:  

    -- Windows shattered, stores looted and burned.

    -- Blackshirts roaming the streets demanding people kneel at their feet.

    -- Censorship, book burning, snitching by neighbors and co-workers.

    -- Media propaganda and manipulation.

    -- The police and "good people" doing nothing to help.

 Amazingly, it's happening here today. And far too many political leaders, media and "good people" are telling us it is acceptable.

 All of us are experiencing some aspect of this dark period in America's history:

    -- Many of us don't fly an American flag at our homes. We don't dare put a Trump sign on our lawn or in our store window, or put a Trump bumper sticker on our car, for fear of violence or vandalism.

    -- On the TV, we all see supposedly rational and respected people calling us racist solely because of the color of our skin.

   -- Our free speech is monitored, censored, shadow-banned or outright banned by those who control social media.

    -- Our great American history is being destroyed, denigrated or erased. Radicals are toppling the statues of George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln and even abolitionists -- heroes who bravely fought against slavery. 

    -- A black NASCAR driver can wrap his car with "Black Lives Matter," but an NBA announcer loses his job for tweeting, "All Lives Matter," and a Philadelphia newspaper editor is forced to resign for writing, "Buildings Matter, Too," as his city burns.

   -- NFL superstar quarterback Drew Brees was forced to beg for forgiveness for saying he will always stand for our national anthem. College football coach Mike Gundy was forced to beg for forgiveness from his players for wearing a T-Shirt with the name of the conservative One America News Network. 

    -- Demented never-Trumper Rick Wilson tried to destroy Domino's pizza for thanking a prominent Trump supporter for a compliment on its pizza in a corporate tweet...in 2012 ...before Trump ever even got into politics.

 When did America lose its freedom of speech and expression? When did we decide to erase all of our history? Isn't that what ISIS does?

 OPEN YOUR EYES. Study what happened in Nazi Germany during the infamous Kristallnacht. The night of Nov. 9-10, 1938, marked the beginning of the Nazis' attack on the Jews. Jewish homes and businesses were looted, desecrated and burned while the police and "good people" stood by and watched. Nazis laughed and cheered as books were burned.

 The name Kristallnacht refers to the litter of broken glass ... exactly the same as what we saw take place in major American cities over the past few weeks. How did they compare? See the blocks of boarded-up businesses all over Manhattan. See 700 buildings damaged, burned and destroyed in Minneapolis. See downtown Seattle run by a "warlord" and armed domestic terrorists with AR-15s. 

 In Paris this week, protesters chanted, "Dirty Jews!" The Marxist mayor of New York City has joined tens of thousands at a "Black Trans Lives Matter" event in Brooklyn while ordering parks and playgrounds for Orthodox Jewish children welded shut. 

 Today's version of book burning is HBO Max banning "Gone With the Wind," a photo of Winston Churchill "disappearing" from Google, Hollywood canceling "Cops" and "Live PD."

 Yes, all that happened in just the last few weeks. You may not have heard about it because it was scarcely reported by the mainstream propaganda media. 

 Never forget the famous Holocaust lesson: After they have come for me, they will come for you, and there will be no one left to stop them.

Trust me, they're coming for all of us. 

They won't stop. This will only get worse and out of control, unless we draw a line in the sand, stand up to the bullies, fight them tooth and nail, and stop them now.

The Silent Majority Can Be Silent No More

Lately it seems that we conservatives can't win even when we're winning. But the country is under siege, so we cannot indulge the luxury of being discouraged.

This year has been one body blow after another to the nation we love. First, there was the coronavirus, and we thought, "How can this get any worse?" Then came the economic shutdown and the incalculable pain and suffering it brought. Next were the riots, the radicals' unopposed seizure of a section of Seattle and the maniacal efforts throughout the country to defund the police. Now a series of rulings from the "conservative" Supreme Court are wreaking untold havoc on the Constitution and the rule of law.

It wouldn't take a Christian fanatic or an excitable conspiracist to conclude that America is now the target of an intense spiritual onslaught -- brought on by its own rampant descent into decadence.

The left has been at war with America as founded for decades, and it has made great progress in transforming our culture and institutions. Leftists are activism-oriented and relentless. They pursue their goals 24/7, exhausting their less activist and less calculating opponents, and advance their agenda by sheer attrition.

But a more important factor in the left's success is the depressing naivete of too many conservatives about its ultimate aims. If you underestimate the extremism and determination of your opponents, how can you counter them?

Perhaps one silver lining emerging from the Democrats' enabling of the proliferating lawlessness in America is that unsuspecting patriots are finally awakening to the horrors facing us and the left's cynical exploitation of them.

The virus isn't red or blue, but the left immediately weaponized it against President Donald Trump, their endless efforts to remove him having failed. From the beginning of this scourge, it was obvious they were more interested in demonizing Trump than in defeating the virus.

The media and the Democratic Party bludgeoned Trump instead of working with him to combat the virus. They excoriated him for responding too slowly when, had he listened to them, he wouldn't have implemented his travel bans, which objectively slowed the spread in the United States.

They savaged him for defying the medical experts, when he was following their advice at every turn, including in shutting down the economy. Though they have shut the economy down even more severely in their blue-controlled states, they preposterously blamed the inevitable economic downturn on him.

Though Trump and virtually all of America condemned the senseless killing of George Floyd, the extreme left seized the moment not merely to protest officer misconduct but to condemn the nation for "systemic racism," "white privilege" and "white supremacy."

Leftist activists converted the protests into riots, looting and violence, and Democratic leaders refused to condemn it and instead fanned the flames lit by the organized mob. They have joined the movement to topple monuments and erase all other unpleasant aspects of American history -- as if they never occurred.

This is nothing new for the Democratic Party. It was shocking that its key figures dared to publicly support some of the certifiably insane provisions of the Green New Deal -- provisions too fantastical for even infants to endorse. It was surreal that some of their leading presidential candidates openly supported the abolition of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. But this widespread move to defund the police takes the insanity to French Revolution-crazy levels.

How can parents not fear for their kids' future? How can an entire political party give itself over to a lawless mob? How can it condone the systematic suppression of political speech by Hollywood, the corporate left and social media giants?

Do rank-and-file liberals want to live in a country whose culture destroys people who won't toe the leftist line? Ironically, it will only be a matter of time before the mob they legitimized will turn on them, as surely as the French revolutionaries turned on their mastermind Maximilien Robespierre. For an unquenchable mob hellbent on eradicating all traditions, systems and laws, nothing is sacred, and no one is immune. Examples already abound. Just ask actor Mark Duplass and author J.K. Rowling. How can anyone be blind to this fascism? How, indeed, unless we really are witnessing a raging spiritual war.

Note to conservatives: If you have been casually dismissing leftist extremism, maybe now you will wake up. Can't you hear the alarms blaring?

Too many on the right also mistakenly believe that this Democratic frenzy and leftist unrest is all based primarily on their contempt for President Donald Trump. He has made them crazy, and they'll do anything to get rid of him. Then everything will return to normal.

Yes, he makes them crazier, more desperate and more unreasonable -- mainly because he's fighting them hammer and tongs -- but he didn't make them leftists, and leftists don't need any prompting to unleash their hell on America. It stands for everything they hate.

With or without Trump, their goals remain the same. But without Trump, their chances of finally undoing America immeasurably increase.

I began this column saying we can't afford to be discouraged. We can't. But that doesn't mean we can afford to be blind to the gravity of the threats we face. Let's wake up and rededicate ourselves to preventing the destruction of America. Don't ever lose hope. My bet is the silent majority is bigger than ever and that we'll see that in November. Stay in the fight like your children's future depends on it -- because it does.

A Tale of Two Americas

What comes of a nation whose newspaper of record publicly caves to overwhelming pressure and repudiates an opinion piece written by a duly elected leading national legislator who boasts degrees from the nation's most famous educational institution, has undeniably relevant life experience on the subject and advances an argument supported by a majority of citizens? America is about to find out.

Last week, The New York Times, in perhaps the single most appalling bout of journalistic malpractice this century, reneged upon an op-ed by Sen. Tom Cotton about a dusty piece of federal legislation, the Insurrection Act of 1807, that President Donald Trump had discussed a couple days prior. The headline read, "Send in the Troops." In arguing to restore law and order in America amidst a once-a-generation anarchic breakdown, Cotton -- a double Harvard alum, former U.S. Court of Appeals law clerk and Bronze Star Army combat veteran -- spoke for a sizable majority of his fellow American citizens, according to reputable opinion polling.

For the grievous sin of permitting a U.S. senator's informed, erudite opinion to grace its opinion page, hundreds of staffers of the Gray Lady threatened a "virtual walkout." The echo chamber that is left-wing Twitter went positively haywire, deeming The Times complicit in fomenting racial strife and/or outright bigotry. In cowardly fashion, The Times publicly threw under the bus its own junior editor who had edited the piece before its editorial page editor "resigned" in disgrace. Again, all The Times did was publish a well-informed argument by a U.S. senator who spoke on behalf of a majority of Americans.

The yawning chasm between our bicoastal ruling class and the Americanists of the heartland has never been more starkly revealed.

For decades, The Times, historically liberal but not quite leftist, invariably published a modicum of right-leaning opinion with which its editorial board no doubt disagreed but that showcased editors' purported commitment to the proverbial marketplace of ideas. Those days appear to be over: Now the frothing woke mob partisans appear to have a plenary veto over contrary opinion -- no matter how popular that opinion or how credible its messenger. The mob is the sieve through which all opinion must be filtered.

The Times is, of course, a private company and is not constitutionally required to publish a diversity of opinions. Still, this is hardly a blueprint for a healthy and well-functioning country. Grand paeans to lofty ideals notwithstanding, a nation ultimately cannot survive unless it inculcates and cultivates a similar overarching set of concrete traits, customs and shared historical experiences across the entirety of its citizenry.

Solidifying the mutual bonds of citizenship without which a free republic cannot endure is impossible when We the People not only do not consume the same media but also are precluded by powerful, self-appointed societal censors from even being aware of differing sentiments. I am proud to publish diverse perspectives at Newsweek, where I serve as opinion editor, but my experience is sadly an exception to the wider rule.

The fraying of America into two discordant, silently warring tribes underscores all the nationwide mayhem of the past two weeks. One tribe looks at the societal uproar and sees a decades-long strive toward fuller equality and justice; the other tribe looks at the chaos and sees a ruinous and self-destructive breakdown of law and order. But those in the former camp cannot plausibly claim to understand the grievances of the latter camp if their most prestigious arbiter of opinion refuses to consider the latter's median viewpoint to be within the window of tolerable opinions for polite society.

If the United States of America is to perdure without unraveling into two warring Divided States of America, we desperately need to recover our lost senses of civic unity and national purpose. Much of this can, and should, be done purely by private actors -- think of casual human interactions like recreational league softball teams and book clubs. But there is a role for government policy here. 

Immigration policy must prioritize assimilation and cultural cohesion. Education policy must prioritize fostering civic knowledge and virtue. Economic policy must prioritize an industrial policy and re-shored critical supply chains over the ethereal interests of globalization. Our political leaders must rally in unison around cherished shared symbols like the national flag.

The road back from the abyss will be arduous. But a unified American republic is worth fighting for. And it should not be too much to ask that our paper of record not repress U.S. senators who deign to speak on behalf of pro-rule of law national majorities.

These Are Troubling Times - Be Careful, Cautious and Focused

A Silent Indicator of Where America Is Headed Politically

Progressives inhabiting the mainstream media, the Democratic Party and Hollywood continue to herald how the Covid-19 virus, tainted economy, condemnation from China, the racist police beating of innocent demonstrators, and the disunifying editorial from four star General James “Chaos” Mattis about our president, are harbingers of doom for the Trump administration and Republican candidates come election time. There is at least one strong indicator that may prove these liberal naysayers wrong about the effects the current schiff-storm may have at the ballot box in November. 

John R. Lott, Jr. wrote in National Review that the “Police have stopped responding to many 911 calls, and massive numbers of inmates are being released early from prison.” During the past 14 days people have been rioting and vandalizing in the streets of America, including unlikely places like Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills, the Magnificent Mile in Chicago, Fifth Avenue in New York City and even Whitefish, Montana. From Florida to Utah and elsewhere around the country, something very interesting is happening in gun stores. Most gun stores receive new product orders on Friday afternoons. For the past month people have been lining up outside gun stores to purchase new weapons and ammunition first thing Saturday morning. Many, many more citizens are purchasing guns and ammo online, provided they have a carry permit, and the online seller then ships the purchase to the gun store of their choice. Delvin Brown, of USA Today, recently detailed this phenomenon of gun purchases by many citizens, "Americans are loading up on guns and ammo in the wake of race riots."

In Polk County, Florida Sheriff Judd Grady praised peaceful protesters but then addressed anyone who may threaten criminal conduct during demonstrations. He said, “Because the people of Polk County like guns, they have guns, I encourage them to own guns, and they're going to be in their homes tonight with their guns loaded, and if you try to break into their homes to steal, to set fires, I'm highly recommending they blow you back out of the house with their guns. So, leave the community alone."

After a day of rioting and destruction of private property on May, 30th, Utah Governor Gary Herbert activated 200 National Guard members to help maintain the peace. Salt Lake City Mayor Erin Mendenhall issued a curfew for the entire city for the rest of the day. Armored police vehicles were seen on city streets after the issuance of the curfew. There was widespread acceptance of these protective policies among all but our restless and woke youth.  According to a Deseret News article in Fall of 2019, gun sales in Utah had already increased 80% over the last decade. 

If gun sales are any indication of how people might vote in the 2020 Election, there is good reason for liberals and social progressives to be concerned. With calls for defunding police departments and thuggish “Black Lives Matter” protests, many citizens, out of the immediate chaos of these events, are assessing what America’s future may look like in the light of the last three weeks. This large uptick in the purchase of guns and ammo would suggest those quietly acquiescing to looters, those destroying property and assaulting innocent citizens, even killing police officers to court political approbation, are not highly esteemed by normal Americans. 

The Mainstream Media, Democrats, and leftists may try to characterize those buying guns and ammo as white supremacists, Klansmen, or part of the 10-15 percent of the population that Joe Biden refers to as bad people.

They would be wrong. Citizens purchasing guns and ammunition are from all backgrounds, many are professional women. They are also store and homeowners, physicians, businesspeople and attorneys. There are even a few academics in this vast group. They want to protect their property and their families when law and order show signs of breaking down. They have seen what real civil chaos looks like, especially in cities and states hued blue, on their televisions and smart phones and they want no part in it.

Every media story that paints leftist portraits of all police, national guard and Secret Service agents trying to protect law-abiding citizens as racist murderers of innocent black people while police cars are burned, stores and restaurants looted and destroyed, may engender many more votes against such glaring hypocrisy. Countless citizens on the sidelines observing such mayhem, don’t have bully pulpits from which to call rubbish on conservative denouncements. But if counting gun sales is akin to reading tea leaves, there is a good probability they will bide their time until November 3^rd and vote against candidates who support this mayhem.

As one of us has written in these pages, you simply can’t believe most of the political polling that transpires these days. Up until the morning of the election we will be indoctrinated to believe that the polls prove that Joe Biden and his seven dwarfs of progressivism have a distinct, if not overwhelming, election lead.

Back in 2017, a study by Pew Research shows that 41% of Republicans, 16% of Democrats and 38% of Independents have a gun in their home. After the recent Covid-19 epidemic and the George Floyd riots, that number is likely much, much higher. As the NRA’s Charles Cooke argued recently, freedom is an issue that is stirring most Americans. There are thousands of protestors. There are many millions who watch in abhorrence.

You are simply not paying attention or stuck in progressive La-La land if you believe this won’t make a decisive difference come November 3^rd.
