Eric Adams wants to revoke NYC's 'sanctuary city' status amid massive migrant influx

As New York City deals with a massive influx of illegal immigrants, Mayor Eric Adams on Thursday said he was asking a judge to revisit the city’s sanctuary city law.

"The law of sanctuary city was in place long before I became mayor. I’m following the law. As a law enforcement person, you know, we follow the law," Adams said. "We are now in court now, today, asking the judge to revisit this law to deal with this humanitarian crisis because, even when they decided to put in place that law, no one thought they would be dealing with a humanitarian crisis of this proportion."

The statement comes as hotels in Upstate New York have canceled pre-booked hotel rooms and booted homeless veterans to make space for Adams’ migrants.

The Crossroads Hotel in Newburgh, New York abruptly canceled a Florida couple’s 30-room reservation made for their wedding, made a few months ago to accommodate traveling guests.

35-year-old Deanna Mifsud and 37-year-old Gary Moretti intend to get married on June 24 in upstate Wallkill, New York, and made the reservation at the hotel because it was 20 minutes away. Their reservation was canceled, with no help from the hotel staff.

Another pair to be married from Queens said Crossroads also canceled their May 20 reservation.

Also in Newburgh, homeless veterans staying in multiple hotels were told by staff that their temporary housing would not be extended and they would have to leave immediately.

The city of Newburgh, which is roughly 60 miles north of New York City, has become the staging ground for illegal immigrants in the state as Mayor Eric Adams continues to transport them into the county from New York City.

Adams signed an emergency declaration on Wednesday, ahead of Title 42’s expiration,  suspending the city’s right-to-shelter rules that find private rooms for illegal immigrants immediately, according to CBS News.

In a statement, a spokesperson said, "New York City has cared for more than 61,000 migrants over the last year — sheltering, feeding, and caring for them almost entirely on our own. In recent days, we've seen upwards of 500 people arrive each day, and we expect those numbers to grow significantly as Title 42 lifts tomorrow."

"No asylum seeking-family that has sought shelter from us over the last year has slept on the street thanks to our colossal efforts, but without more support from our federal and state partners, we are concerned the worst may be yet to come. With over 130 emergency sites and eight humanitarian relief centers already opened, we have reached our limit, and this last week we had to resort to temporarily housing recent arrivals in gyms.

"In an effort to mitigate those risks and find room within our shelter system, the city has temporarily suspended the policy surrounding timing for placements in shelters. This is not a decision taken lightly and we will make every effort to get asylum seekers into shelter as quickly as possible as we have done since day one," the statement concluded.

Regarding the emergency declaration, Adams said on Thursday, "this was a hard decision, but it's the right decision, that this is just wrong what is happening to New York City. It's wrong and no one seems to care, but I care. And it was a challenging thing to do, but we're doing the right thing. No one thought about a humanitarian crisis when they first took this court case of right-to-shelter."

"Do you know last week we got 4,200 people? We get in an average of 500 people a day and Title 42 is not lifted. We could potentially get thousands of people a day in our city. It's wrong for those who are coming here like Commissioner Castro, and it's wrong for New Yorkers who are here," Adams told reporters.

Mayor Eric Adams of New York City is very unhappy these days.  He can't win on the migrant crisis because no city can handle a daily flow of people like this. The word from the Big Apple is that Mayor Adams is angry.  This is from Michael Goodwin:   

Watching Mayor Adams get attacked by The New York Times and other left-wing Democrats after he criticized President Biden’s hand­ling of the migrant mess, I was tempted to praise the mayor for courageous straight talk.

But the moment passed because Adams soon took a different tack, creating confusion about what he believes and where he stands.

Nearly a year after the mayor first announced that 2,800 uninvited newcomers were crowded into city shelters, his policy for dealing with the expanding crisis is almost as messy as the problem itself.

He zigs, he zags, he flip-flops and undercuts today what he said with conviction and certainty yesterday.

Pick a side, mayor, and stick to it! 

More and more, New Yorkers want the mayor to get angry and to stand up for them.  Yes, New Yorkers want their mayor to remember that song "Johnny get angry".  It's about a girl who wants her Johnny to get angry and show that he really cares.  So New Yorkers should stand in front of the mayor's office and sing something like this:

Give Biden the biggest lecture he's ever had

I want a brave man, I want a cave man

Mayor, show me that you care, really care for me

Well, it worked for the girl in the pop song.  It's time for Mayor Adams to go to the source and call out the Biden border policy.  Calling for immigration reform is cute but won't fix this.  Calling on Congress to "do their job" is way too late.  It's time for Mayor Adams to get angry.  Call out the Biden policy because the problem started at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.

The Great ‘Democracy’ Heist

The opportunity to politicize threats to democracy is evidently too inviting to pass up. For progressives, it has become a one-size-fits-all political rallying cry.

The alarm bell is clanging. American democracy is in serious peril. We almost lost it on January 6, and if we elect the wrong crowd, they’ll try again.

It’s a near-constant political refrain from the progressive Left. For example, last week’s DNC online funding appeal quoted Bill Clinton, Barack Obama, and Joe Biden all warning of that imminent threat. The president works it into every speech. Politicians and TV talkingheads follow suit, incessantly.

We should take it seriously. Our form of government is not a pure democracy; it’s a Democratic Republic. But the underlying principle of democracy — Lincoln’s government of the people, by the people, and for the people — is the heart and soul of our nation. If we lose that, little else matters.

Unfortunately, the opportunity to politicize threats to democracy is evidently too inviting to pass up. For progressives, it has become a one-size-fits-all political rallying cry — most often personified by Donald Trump, the defeated president who attempted to derail the certification of his successor, presumably to reinstall himself as president. Never forget: It was an insurrection!

But first, a bit of realism:

Long before media and politicians took it upon themselves to interpret what happened, we all watched it unfold in real time. We watched Trump’s meltdown at losing to an uninspiring opponent who’d campaigned from his basement and then somehow managed to garner millions more votes than any presidential candidate in history.

We watched as Trump searched frantically for a judge to reverse the election outcome, and, failing that, to hold up the train by challenging the election certification (a tactic attempted by others in previous elections). We watched as Trump orchestrated a massive rally of supporters on January 6 — and we watched, with head-shaking dismay, as his rally devolved into an invasion by some into the Capitol building.

That wasn’t the first protest-turned-violent we’ve ever seen. Just four years before, there had been a violent protest of Trump’s own inauguration, just blocks away from the Capitol. And following George Floyd’s death there were thousands of violent protests nationwide.

The January 6 riot targeting the U.S. Capitol itself was particularly ugly and alarming. But until a TV commentator likened it to an insurrection, that label would seem a gross exaggeration.

Insurrections are big operations. Our American Civil War claimed over 600,000 lives over four awful years. A century later, our CIA recruited, equipped, armed, and trained an assault force of 3,000 to overthrow Cuba’s Fidel Castro — and failed miserably. By comparison, the notion that a rowdy group of Proud Boys armed with flagpoles could depose the United States government is patently absurd.

But before we dismiss the thought entirely, let’s consider more broadly some other very real events that should give us pause about the safety of our democracy:

• As recently confirmed in the Durham report — and evident to anyone paying attention — our FBI actively interfered with the 2016 election, and for two years thereafter conducted an intensely disruptive investigation into the transparently bogus Russia collusion allegations.
• During the 2020 presidential election, progressive print, broadcast, and social media — with active engagement of the FBI and misleading input from former CIA officials — collaborated to keep important, credible information from American voters.
• Actions of the Nancy Pelosi-led House and the U.S. Department of Justice greatly exacerbated public misperceptions of 1/6/21, to the point that many Americans tacitly accept the illogical premise that it was truly an “insurrection.”

In each case, politicized interference, particularly by agents of the government, has undermined free public engagement in the election process, the essence of democracy.

So, for once I’ll side with Clinton, Obama, and Co. — to a point, at least — and agree that Americans should be concerned about the loss of our democracy.

But if that happens, it won’t be by armed assault or violent coup, and not at the hands of an unruly band of protesters inspired by an angry orange-haired tyrant. Nor will it involve the hacking of voting machines or the mysterious appearance of boxes of blank ballots.

No, the loss of democracy — if it happens — will be smooth and seamless. Voting will probably be even easier than today, although less secure. More importantly, people will know whom to vote for, based on convincing guidance from every form of modern communications. Those in power will know how to keep themselves in power, and voters will have been conditioned to support them, unconditionally.

In fact, I suspect that if we lose our democracy, we won’t even notice that it’s gone. We’ll still have something we call democracy, but it will not be the same. We’ll salute the same flag but it will just carry a different meaning.

With that awful prospect in mind, we’d best remain on high alert for the real threats to democracy.

Another Illegal Immigrant Protected by Local Sanctuary Laws Charged with Violent Crimes

In yet another disturbing example of the devastation caused by open border policies, an illegal immigrant who entered the U.S. as a child a decade ago has been charged with first-degree rape, kidnapping and armed robbery in a county that proudly offers migrants sanctuary. The 20-year-old, Jose Roberto Hernandez-Penal, is accused of raping a woman and robbing her friend this month at a Maryland park after threatening the women with a machete. Days earlier police say he raped a 15-year-old girl at the same park in Montgomery County, which has long protected illegal aliens from federal authorities.

The illegal immigrant lives in Hyattsville, which sits in another Maryland county—Prince George’s—famous for its sanctuary policies. The measures protect illegal aliens by, among other things, releasing even the most dangerous criminals from jail to shield them from deportation. Hernandez-Penal, a native of El Salvador, entered the country illegally in 2013, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) told a local media outlet, and was “ordered removed in absentia by an immigration judge” about a year later and again approximately seven months after that. Nevertheless, he remained in the country and committed heinous crimes against unsuspecting residents. Police say at approximately 2:40 p.m. on May 16 Hernandez-Penal approached two adult females on the Northwest Brach Trail of Burnt Mills East Special Park, displayed a machete, stole their property and sexually assaulted one of the victims. Upon leaving the scene, the illegal immigrant assaulted an adult male. Officials told several local news outlets that Hernandez-Penal is also suspected of raping a 15-year-old girl on the same trail of the two-acre facility a week earlier. The park is one of hundreds operated by Montgomery County along with other recreational facilities such as basketball courts, campsites, tennis courts and playgrounds.

Detectives handling the case for the Montgomery County Police Department believe there may be additional victims of sexual assault by Hernandez-Penal that have not contacted authorities. The agency reveals that the illegal immigrant “made statements of involvement” during interviews with detectives after his recent arrest. He was then transported to the Montgomery County Central Processing Unit where he was charged with first degree rape, first degree assault, second degree assault, armed robbery, kidnapping, and weapons-related crimes. In its news release detectives urge anyone who may have been a victim of Hernandez-Penal to contact the agency’s Special Victims Investigations Division (SVID).

It is important to note that this is the same law enforcement agency that regularly releases dangerous criminals like Hernandez-Penal from jail to protect them from federal authorities. For example, a few years ago an illegal immigrant from El Salvador who raped a seven-year-old girl multiple times was released because under Montgomery County’s sanctuary law police is banned from cooperating with the feds. Rather than honor a detainer issued by ICE under a partnership known as 287(g) that notifies the federal agency of inmates in the country illegally so that they can be deported, local officials freed the child rapist on bond. Not surprisingly, the rapist vanished. Prince George’s County, where Hernandez-Penal lives, practices the same sanctuary measures. In fact, ICE has resorted to unconventional methods to capture criminals in both jurisdictions. In one instance the agency preempted Montgomery and Prince George’s counties’ imminent release of a batch of illegal immigrant offenders by publicly disclosing their identity, complete with mug shots. Most were incarcerated for sexual crimes involving children, including rape and serious physical abuse that resulted in death. A couple were jailed for murder and assault.

The Maryland cases are part of a national crises generated by local governments around the country that offer violent illegal immigrants sanctuary. Under 287(g), ICE is notified of jail inmates in the country illegally so that they can be deported after serving time for state crimes or making bail. Unfortunately, a growing number of city and county law enforcement agencies are instead releasing the illegal aliens—many with serious convictions such as child sex offenses, rape and murder—rather than turn them over to federal authorities for removal.
